The Bulgarian residence permit for retirees allows foreigners who receive a pension to live in Bulgaria long term. First a type D visa is obtained from a Bulgarian consulate, then a residence permit application is made to the Migration Directorate in Bulgaria. The key requirement is to show that you can support yourself in Bulgaria with a regular pension income. The permit is issued for a fixed period and renewed each time.
Because of its proximity to Türkiye, low cost of living and EU membership, Bulgaria is increasingly popular with retirees. In this article we explain what the retirement residence permit is, who can apply, which documents are required and how the application proceeds step by step. To compare it with other residence routes, see our Bulgarian residence permit page.
What is the Bulgarian residence permit for retirees?
The retirement residence permit is a long-term residence type based on pension income as the purpose of living in Bulgaria. Unlike the work or company routes, you do not need to set up a business or work in Bulgaria. Instead, you are expected to show that your pension covers your life in Bulgaria.
With this permit you can register an address in Bulgaria, open a bank account, sign a rental contract and use local services. The residence card also lets you travel in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Who can apply?
- People who receive a pension in Türkiye or another country
- People who can prove with an official document that the pension is paid regularly
- People who have an address to stay in Bulgaria (rented or owned)
- People who can take out health insurance
- People with a clean criminal record
The Migration Directorate decides whether the pension is sufficient to live in Bulgaria. If your pension is low, additional proof of income such as bank savings strengthens the file. Since the sufficiency criteria can change over time, we assess the current situation for your file before applying.
Can my spouse and children come too?
The spouse and dependent family members of a person with a retirement residence permit can obtain residence through family reunification. For this, the family relationship must be documented and it must be shown that the income is sufficient for the family as well. Details on our family reunification in Bulgaria page.
Required documents
The document list can vary by consulate and period. Generally requested:
| Document | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid longer than the planned stay |
| Pension certificate | Document from the social security institution showing that you are retired and the monthly amount |
| Proof of income | Statement of the account where the pension is paid; savings documents if any |
| Proof of accommodation | Rental contract or title deed |
| Health insurance | Health insurance valid in Bulgaria |
| Criminal record | Apostilled and translated into Bulgarian |
| Photo and form | In the format required by the consulate |
Documents from Türkiye must be apostilled and given a sworn Bulgarian translation. For health insurance, see the options on our travel health insurance page; for long-term residence a policy valid in Bulgaria is required.
Step-by-step application
- Preliminary assessment: we review your income, documents and family situation and decide whether the retirement route suits you.
- Preparing the documents: the pension certificate, criminal record, apostille and translations are completed; the address in Bulgaria is arranged.
- Type D visa application: an application for a long-stay visa is made to the Bulgarian consulate. Details on the visa: what is a Bulgarian type D visa?
- Entry into Bulgaria and residence application: after entering Bulgaria with the D visa, the residence application is made to the Migration Directorate before the visa expires.
- Receiving the residence card: once the application is approved, the residence card is collected.
How is the retirement residence permit renewed?
The retirement residence permit is issued for a fixed period. A renewal application is made before it expires and you document again that your pension continues and that your address and insurance remain in place. For renewal timing and documents, read our article Bulgarian residence permit renewal.
People who have lived legally and continuously in Bulgaria for a long time can later apply for permanent residence. Details: Bulgarian permanent residence.
Can the retirement residence permit lead to citizenship?
The retirement residence permit does not directly grant citizenship. Citizenship through residence requires having lived legally in Bulgaria for a long time, speaking Bulgarian and meeting the other conditions of the law; this route takes years.
The situation is different if your family emigrated from Bulgaria. People of Bulgarian origin can apply for citizenship directly, without waiting for the residence period and without the Bulgarian language requirement. For many emigrants who are retired and thinking of settling in Bulgaria, this is the shortest route. You can check whether you are entitled on our Bulgarian citizenship page.
Common mistakes
- Getting the pension certificate from the wrong institution: an official document showing the amount and regularity of the pension is required.
- Leaving the address to the last minute: the file is not complete without proof of accommodation.
- Missing the D visa deadline: the residence application must be made within the visa period.
- Name differences in translations: if your name is spelled differently in documents, the file may be returned; see name equivalence certificate.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an age limit for the Bulgarian retirement residence permit?
There is no specific age requirement. What matters is that you receive a pension and can document it.
My pension is paid in Türkiye; do I need to transfer it to Bulgaria?
It is not mandatory. However, account statements showing that the pension is paid regularly are required. Opening a bank account in Bulgaria and transferring part of the pension makes it easier to show your income at renewals.
Can I work in Bulgaria with a retirement residence permit?
The retirement residence permit is not issued for work. If you want to work in Bulgaria, a separate work permit is required.
If I buy a house, will I get a residence permit?
Owning a home does not by itself give a residence permit; however, it can be used as proof of accommodation in a retirement application.
How long does the application take?
The decision periods for the D visa and the residence application run separately; together with preparing the documents, the whole process can take several months. We work out a realistic timeline for your file in the preliminary assessment.
